ChatGPT reaches QuantGPT as a custom MCP server, added in the browser at chatgpt.com/plugins. You sign in to QuantGPT once; there is no key to paste. After that, ChatGPT can search the strategy library and run backtests mid-conversation. If your ChatGPT plan cannot add a custom MCP server, use the setup prompt instead.

// WHAT YOU GET

Once connected, ChatGPT can search QuantGPT's strategy library, run backtests on decades of US market history, grade a stock and query the research warehouse, in the middle of a conversation. The work runs on QuantGPT's side, and ChatGPT gets the numbers back, losing years included. The connection uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard AI apps use to reach outside tools.

// BEFORE YOU START

A ChatGPT plan that can add a custom MCP server. Your plan needs the Add custom MCP server option in the Add menu at chatgpt.com/plugins; we connect QuantGPT on Plus. On a Business, Enterprise or Education workspace an admin may have to allow it. ChatGPT shows its own note that custom MCP servers introduce risk: connect only to servers you trust.
A QuantGPT account. QuantGPT ($49 a month) allows 500 AI calls a day and QuantGPT Pro ($149 a month) allows 1,500, each with a 3-day free trial. The plans.

// THE STEPS

Open ChatGPT Plugins. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins in the browser, press Add and choose Add custom MCP server.
Name it. Name: QuantGPT. Description, for example: Backtests and research on market history. The icon is optional.
Point it at QuantGPT. Under Connection, keep Server URL and enter https://terminal.quantgpt.co/mcp, with the /mcp path. Leave Authentication on OAuth; the advanced OAuth settings can stay as they are.
Create it. Read ChatGPT's note that custom MCP servers introduce risk, tick I understand and want to continue, and press Create as a plugin.
Sign in to QuantGPT. ChatGPT registers itself with QuantGPT and opens QuantGPT's sign-in page, either now or the first time it calls a QuantGPT tool. Sign in, check that the approval page says it will send you to chatgpt.com, and press CONNECT. There is no key to paste.
Check the plugin. QuantGPT now shows under Settings → Plugins, with its permission (the default is Allow low-risk tools) and a Refresh tools button.
Use it in a chat. Start a new chat, pick QuantGPT from the + menu in the message box, and ask your question; the message shows a QuantGPT tag.

// CHECK IT WORKED

Ask: Use the QuantGPT app's describe_capabilities tool and tell me what data it covers. A connected app answers with QuantGPT's own map: the data it holds, the factors, the benchmarks and the method.

On QuantGPT's side, open your account page. Under Keys for your AI, the connection shows as a key labelled connector: plus the name ChatGPT registered. Revoke it there to end the connection.

Backtest a 200-day moving average rule on SPY and show the losing years

If ChatGPT answers from memory instead of calling QuantGPT, name the app, as OpenAI's own guide suggests: Use the QuantGPT app: backtest a 200-day moving average rule on SPY and show the losing years.

Your AI picks the tool and the settings. It may test the rule on SPY itself, or on the S&P 500 index with the closest built-in rule (the 10-month average, or the 50-day and 200-day golden cross). Ask it to say which tool it called and with what settings, so you know exactly what was tested.

// WHAT COMES BACK

A backtest answers with the numbers behind it, not a summary. Your AI receives:

The rule as the engine read it, the dates covered and the number of periods.
For the rule and for its benchmark side by side (for a timing rule, the benchmark is buy and hold): growth per year, the worst fall from a peak, volatility, the Sharpe ratio, the share of winning periods, and a luck check (the probabilistic Sharpe ratio).
The same statistics split at a cut year (2015 unless you pick another), so the years after the cut read on their own.
A table by decade.
Every period's return, for the rule and for the benchmark. That is how your AI finds the losing years: it adds the returns up by calendar year.
For stock-picking backtests, a cost model: the measured turnover and the results net of 5, 10, 25 and 50 basis points a side.
One of three findings (DATA VALIDATED, TRADE-OFF or NO EDGE) with the sentence that says what it means.
Often, links to share-ready PNG charts, one of them year by year. Those links are public: anyone who has one can open it.
A slow run answers with a job id first; your AI collects the result with fetch_job.

Two limits travel with the numbers. Companies that later delisted are in the market-wide backtest universe from 1998 and earlier years hold survivors only, so a backtest across the whole market that starts before 1998 leans toward survivors; backtests start in 1998 unless you pick another year. And a backtest shows what happened in the past, not what will happen. QuantGPT's server instructions ask your AI to say so when it reports a market-wide result.

// THE TOOLS CHATGPT SEES

On connect, QuantGPT lists every tool your plan opens, each under its own name, with no categories to switch on. The table holds the ones to start with. The server also sends your AI instructions when it connects: what the data holds, the method, and how the tools fit together.

`run_backtest, run_sweep`	Backtest criteria (up to 8 filters and a ranking, or a list of tickers you choose), or up to 100 variants in one call.
`challenge_finding`	The skeptic pass: eleven checks that try to break a result, strongest objection first.
`fetch_job`	Collect a slow run that answered with a job id.
`grade_stock, pre_trade_brief`	One stock's grades on six dimensions against the market, and a read that puts the strongest objection first. Never an order.
`query_warehouse, list_warehouse`	Read-only SQL over every research database, and the map of its tables.

Every tool in the list can be called at any time. If ChatGPT does not see a tool, open QuantGPT under Settings → Plugins and press Refresh tools to pull the current list into ChatGPT.

// TROUBLESHOOTING

The Add menu has no Add custom MCP server. Your plan or workspace cannot add one yet. Check you are in the browser at chatgpt.com/plugins; on a workspace, ask an admin. The setup prompt works on any plan.
ChatGPT says QuantGPT is already a custom MCP server. An earlier QuantGPT plugin uses the same URL. Open Settings → Plugins → QuantGPT, press Delete app, then add it again.
QuantGPT's sign-in never opens, or ChatGPT reports an authentication error. Check the URL is exactly https://terminal.quantgpt.co/mcp, with https and the /mcp path. Delete the plugin (Settings → Plugins → QuantGPT → Delete app) and add it again.
The approval page names a destination other than chatgpt.com. Press CANCEL. QuantGPT's approval page always shows where it will send you, and for ChatGPT that is chatgpt.com.
ChatGPT answers without calling QuantGPT. Pick QuantGPT from the + menu for that chat, then name the app in your message: Use the QuantGPT app.
ChatGPT asks before it runs a tool. That is its plugin permission: see the FAQ below.
An error mentions the daily cap, HTTP 429 or HTTP 402. Your plan's AI calls are used up for now. The count is per account, across every key and connection; only tool calls count, not connecting or listing tools; and it resets at midnight UTC. HTTP 402 means the 3-day trial's 5 AI calls are used: start the plan from your account page. A message that starts with slow down means the limit of 120 requests a minute per account: wait a minute.
The answer says the engine is busy. QuantGPT runs backtests in a fair queue. Wait a few seconds and ask again.
To disconnect. Revoke the connector: key on your QuantGPT account page, and uninstall or delete QuantGPT under Settings → Plugins in ChatGPT.

// THE SETUP PROMPT, FOR PLANS WITHOUT CONNECTORS

On a ChatGPT plan that cannot add a custom MCP server, or anywhere you cannot add an app, open QuantGPT's setup prompt, copy all of it, and paste it as the first message of a new ChatGPT chat. ChatGPT then knows what QuantGPT holds, the method and the first steps, and walks you through them. It cannot run studies itself: you run them in the terminal and bring the numbers back.

AI calls are counted per account, across all your keys and connections: 500 a day on QuantGPT and 1,500 a day on QuantGPT Pro, the 3-day trial included. Only tool calls count toward those; connecting and listing tools do not. Daily counts reset at midnight UTC. Separately, each account can make at most 120 requests a minute.

Does connecting ChatGPT to QuantGPT need a paid ChatGPT plan?

It needs a ChatGPT plan that can add a custom MCP server: the Add menu at chatgpt.com/plugins offers Add custom MCP server when yours can. We connect QuantGPT on Plus. On a plan without the option, use the setup prompt instead; ChatGPT then knows QuantGPT but cannot run studies itself.

Do I need a QuantGPT key for ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT signs in to QuantGPT (OAuth), and the connection appears on your account page as a key labelled connector:, which you can revoke. OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT cannot present a custom API key to an MCP server, so the sign-in is how it connects.

Why does ChatGPT ask me before it runs a QuantGPT tool?

ChatGPT's plugin permission decides when it asks. Under Settings, Plugins, the default permission is Allow low-risk tools, and you can change it for QuantGPT alone. None of QuantGPT's tools can place, change or cancel an order; a few save things to your own QuantGPT account, such as a study.
